Den and Family Fun !
Jungle in a Jar
Materials: Clean 64-ounce or larger clear
glass or plastic jar (or substitute a clear plastic
storage container with transparent, see-through
sides and tight-fitting lid), small rocks, potting
soil, small plants; one or two plastic, waterproof
jungle animals (optional) Put approximately 2 inches of small rocks in the bottom of the container; add soil, enough to more than cover the roots of the plants to be planted. Plant plants and add optional jungle animals.
Water until soil is damp but not soggy. Put lid on so it is tight. The terrarium should not need watering if the lid is airtight.
MAKE A GLASS HARMONICA
Benjamin Franklin invented the lightning rod and bifocal eyeglasses, but did you know he
invented a glass harmonica? (He called it an armonica.) Franklin’s harmonica consisted of glass hemispheres attached to a turning rod, and he played it by running a wet finger across the rims of the glasses. The glasses were of different sizes, so each produced different vibrations resulting in different sounds. Franklin later refined his invention so that the glasses dipped in water as the
rod turned, keeping the glass rims wet. Try making
your own version of Franklin’s glass harmonica. Line
up glasses of different sizes on a firm surface. Pour
water into each glass. (Having water in glasses makes
it easy to keep finger wet.) Run your forefinger
quickly around rims. Notice that the sound varies with
the thickness of the glass. Ask a friend or two to join
in and you can have a glass harmonica orchestra.

Tonight’s Pack meeting, fun and entertainment brought to you by our Jr. Webelos!
Each webelos will receive his bridge kit consisting of 100 popsicle sticks and a 4oz bottle of Elmer’s glue. These are the only supplies they may use in the structure of their bridge, a design of their choice. Each will bring his bridge to the Nov pack mtg to have weights hung from them until they break! This is a terrific way to understand the thought/planning put into structures as they work towards earning their Engineering badges. Note: Having a pizza party for the scouts at the beginning of the mtg!
